Skis may seem like a remarkably simple piece of equipment. Two long platforms, bindings, boots, poles - and you are ready to move across the snow.
But behind this simple design is an enormous world of different disciplines, techniques and types of skiing.
You can use skis to cover dozens of kilometers, race through slalom gates, launch from a ski jump, perform multiple flips in the air, descend untouched mountain terrain, climb high-altitude peaks, reach speeds of more than 250 km/h, or even compete on skis without snow.
There are Olympic disciplines, World Championships, World Cups, independent international competitions, and skiing disciplines that have already disappeared from the competitive scene.

Skis as a Means of Transportation

Downhill

Courses can include large vertical drops, high-speed turns, jumps and technically demanding sections.

Super-G
Super-G, or Super Giant Slalom, occupies a position between Downhill and Giant Slalom.
The speed is very high, but the course contains more turns than a Downhill course.
This makes it a particularly interesting combination of speed and technical skiing.
Giant Slalom
Giant Slalom places greater emphasis on turning technique.
The gates are closer together than in Super-G, requiring the athlete to constantly change direction while maintaining speed.
Slalom
Slalom is one of the most technically demanding Alpine disciplines.
The gates are positioned very close together, forcing athletes to make rapid, precise turns.
Maximum speed is less important than efficiency.
The fastest skier is not necessarily the one who reaches the highest speed - it is the one who can maintain the best line through the course without making mistakes.
Alpine Combined
Alpine Combined combines a speed discipline with a technical discipline.
The traditional format consisted of a Downhill or Super-G run followed by a Slalom run.
The concept is designed to identify athletes who can perform well in very different types of Alpine skiing.
Team Combined
Team Combined is a newer Olympic format.
Instead of one athlete completing both components, different athletes can contribute to the speed and technical portions of the competition.
It was introduced to the Olympic programme at Milano Cortina 2026.
Freeride Skiing
Freeride represents a very different approach to skiing.
Instead of following a prepared course with gates, the skier chooses a line through natural terrain.
A freeride descent can include:

Cross-country skiing is almost the opposite of Alpine skiing.
While Alpine skiing is largely about descending a mountain as quickly as possible, Cross-Country skiing is about covering a distance using your own physical effort.
Cross-country skis are therefore significantly different from Alpine skis.

Relay
Relay races are team competitions in which athletes complete different sections of the course.
Team Sprint
Two athletes form a team and take turns completing short sections of the race.
Ski Marathons
There is also a huge world of long-distance ski races.
Ski marathons can cover much longer distances than standard World Cup events and have developed their own competitive and recreational culture.
One of the most famous examples is Sweden's Vasaloppet.
These races can attract thousands of participants, from elite athletes to recreational skiers.

Ski Jumping
Ski Jumping is one of the most spectacular skiing disciplines.
The athlete accelerates down a specially designed ramp, takes off, flies through the air and attempts to land as far down the hill as possible while maintaining excellent technique.

Nordic Combined - Two Disciplines in One
Nordic Combined combines:
Ski Jumping + Cross-Country skiing.
An athlete first performs a ski jump.
Then they take part in a cross-country race.
The result of the jumping competition determines the starting advantage in the subsequent race, depending on the competition format.
This means athletes need two completely different sets of abilities:

The origins of Nordic Combined can be traced to Norway in 1892, with one of the first major competitions taking place at the Holmenkollen Ski Festival.

Freestyle Skiing - When Skis Became an Acrobatic Tool
Freestyle skiing developed as a distinct culture during the second half of the 20th century.

Telemark skiing is one of the most distinctive forms of skiing.
Its defining feature is the free-heel binding system.
The characteristic Telemark turn involves bending the legs and placing one ski forward while the other moves back.
The skier creates the recognizable Telemark stance while turning.
Telemark is not simply an historical technique.
It is still an international competitive discipline.
FIS currently organizes Telemark World Cups and World Championships, with modern events including Sprint, Parallel Sprint and other formats.
Telemark is particularly interesting because it preserves a direct connection with the early history of skiing while functioning as a modern competitive sport.
Ski Touring - Skiing for Travel
Ski Touring is not necessarily a competitive activity.
Its main purpose is to travel through mountainous terrain using skis for both ascent and descent.
Special bindings allow the heel to move freely during the climb, while climbing skins provide traction on snow.
At the top or before a descent, the equipment is switched into downhill mode.
Ski Touring is particularly popular in mountainous regions of Europe and North America.

Ski Mountaineering - When Skiing Meets Alpinism
Ski Mountaineering exists at the intersection of skiing and mountaineering.

A World Record Above 255 km/h
On March 22, 2023, French skier Simon Billy reached 255.500 km/h at Vars in France.
That became the men's world speed record.

In 2026, Italian skier Valentina Greggio set a new women's world record of 248.27 km/h, also in Vars.
These numbers are difficult to comprehend.
A skier travelling at more than 250 km/h is moving significantly faster than the speed of a car on a typical highway.
Grass Skiing - Skiing Without Snow
Skiing does not necessarily require snow.
Grass Skiing uses specially designed skis that allow athletes to descend grassy slopes.
It is not simply a summer recreational activity.
FIS organizes official Grass Skiing World Cups and World Championships.

They were originally developed primarily as a way for cross-country skiers to maintain fitness and technique during the summer.
Over time, Rollerskiing developed into a competitive discipline of its own.

For elite cross-country skiers, rollerskis provide a way to continue training when there is no snow.
Ski Orienteering - Skiing and Navigation
There is another discipline where skis are used in a completely different way.
Ski Orienteering combines:
skiing + navigation.
Athletes receive a map and must navigate between control points while choosing their own route.
Being a fast skier is not enough.
