When people talk about the highest mountains in Ukraine, Hoverla is almost always the first name that comes to mind. And for good reason - at 2,061 meters, it is the highest peak in Ukraine.
But Hoverla is only one of a group of high mountain peaks in the Ukrainian Carpathians. Six Ukrainian mountains rise above 2,000 meters, and all of them are located in the Chornohora mountain range.
They are Hoverla, Brebeneskul, Pip Ivan Chornohirskyi, Petros, Hutyn-Tomnatyk and Rebra.
There are also dozens of other peaks that do not reach 2,000 meters but have their own character, history and fascinating hiking routes.
Where Are the Highest Mountains in Ukraine?
Almost all of Ukraine's highest peaks are located in the Ukrainian Carpathians, specifically in the Chornohora range.
The Chornohora ridge is one of the most famous hiking areas in the Ukrainian Carpathians. All six Ukrainian peaks above 2,000 meters are concentrated here.
Interestingly, the difference in elevation between the first and sixth highest peaks is only about 60 meters. So although Hoverla is the absolute highest point, it is not dramatically higher than the other major peaks.

Hoverla - The Highest Mountain in Ukraine

Hoverla is not simply the highest mountain in Ukraine. It is also one of the country's most recognizable peaks and probably the best-known mountain in the Ukrainian Carpathians.
It is located on the Chornohora ridge, on the border between Zakarpattia and Ivano-Frankivsk regions.
The summit has a distinctive rounded-pyramidal shape, and in good weather it offers broad views across Chornohora and the surrounding mountain ranges.
The Most Popular Routes to Hoverla
There are several routes to the summit.
One of the most popular starts near the Zaroslіak sports base. Thousands of hikers use this route every year.
Another option approaches Hoverla from the Lazeshchyna area. More ambitious multi-day hikes can combine Hoverla with Petros and other peaks of the Chornohora ridge.
Hoverla as a Symbol
Hoverla's popularity extends far beyond hiking.
Its silhouette has become one of the visual symbols of the Ukrainian mountains. For many people, their first ascent of Hoverla is not simply a hike to a particular summit but an introduction to the mountains themselves.

Brebeneskul - The Second-Highest Peak in Ukraine

Pip Ivan Chornohirskyi - The Mountain of the "White Elephant"

Pip Ivan Chornohirskyi is the third-highest peak in Ukraine.
It is also one of the most fascinating mountains in the country from a historical perspective.
At the summit stand the ruins of a former astronomical and meteorological observatory, built by Poland in 1938.
Because of the distinctive appearance of the building when it is covered in snow and ice, the observatory became known as the "White Elephant."
The combination of the summit, severe winter weather and the old stone observatory has made Pip Ivan one of the most atmospheric mountains in Ukraine.
Routes to Pip Ivan
One of the best-known routes starts in Dzembronya.
Another approach begins near Shybene and passes Lake Maricheika.
Pip Ivan is also frequently included in multi-day hikes along the Chornohora ridge.
Petros - The Fourth-Highest Mountain in Ukraine
Elevation: 2,020 m
Petros is located in the northwestern part of the Chornohora ridge, not far from Hoverla.
Although the difference in elevation between the two mountains is only 41 meters, their character is quite different.
Petros has steeper slopes and a more pronounced mountain profile. Because of this, it is often considered a more challenging objective, especially in winter.
Popular routes to Petros begin from Lazeshchyna, Kvasy and Yasinia. One particularly interesting option is to combine Petros and Hoverla in the same hike.
Petros also has a distinctive silhouette that can easily be recognized from neighboring peaks.

Hutyn-Tomnatyk and Rebra

Unlike Hoverla, it does not attract large numbers of visitors simply looking to reach Ukraine's highest point.

Rebra - 2,001 m
Rebra is the sixth and final Ukrainian two-thousander.
Its name reflects the distinctive rocky formations of the summit.
Rebra is also part of several routes across the Chornohora ridge and is often visited together with Brebeneskul and Pip Ivan.
What Are the Ukrainian Two-Thousanders?
A two-thousander is a mountain whose elevation exceeds 2,000 meters above sea level.
Ukraine has six such peaks, and all of them are located in Chornohora.
This is an interesting geographical feature: virtually all of Ukraine's highest mountains are concentrated within a single mountain range.
For hikers who want to visit all of Ukraine's highest peaks, Chornohora is therefore the obvious destination.
What Mountains Come After the Two-Thousanders?
Once the six two-thousanders are passed, the elevations gradually decrease, but the number of interesting mountains certainly does not.

There are therefore many mountains beyond the official list of Ukrainian two-thousanders that are well worth exploring.
And there is an important point here:
Elevation does not necessarily determine the difficulty of a route.
A mountain of 1,800 meters with a steep slope, difficult weather and a long approach can be a more demanding objective for a particular hiker than a popular route up Hoverla.
The Highest Mountain in Crimea
If we are talking about the highest mountains in Ukraine, the discussion should not be limited to the Carpathians.
The highest peak of the Crimean Mountains is Roman-Kosh, at 1,545 meters.
It is located in the Babuhan-yayla massif and is the highest point of the Crimean Peninsula.
In terms of elevation, Roman-Kosh is therefore considerably lower than the Ukrainian Carpathian two-thousanders.
But the Crimean Mountains have a completely different character: yaylas, limestone massifs, karst formations and the proximity of the Black Sea create a landscape unlike that of the Carpathians.
The Most Popular Routes to Ukraine's Highest Mountains
If you want to experience Chornohora rather than simply reach one summit, there are many possibilities.
Zarosliak - Hoverla
One of the most popular routes to Ukraine's highest mountain.
The relatively short approach has made it one of the best-known options for a first ascent of Hoverla.
Lazeshchyna - Petros
A classic route to Petros from the Zakarpattia side.
It can be combined with a continuation toward Hoverla.
Dzembronya - Pip Ivan
One of the best-known routes to the "White Elephant."
It offers not only the summit itself but also the distinctive landscapes of eastern Chornohora.
Petros - Hoverla
A particularly attractive option for hikers who want to visit two of Ukraine's best-known peaks during one trip.
The Chornohora Ridge
This is a completely different kind of adventure.
A multi-day route across Chornohora can connect Petros, Hoverla, Brebeneskul, Pip Ivan and other peaks.
Such a journey gives a much better sense of the scale and character of the Chornohora ridge than climbing a single mountain.
The Highest Mountains in Ukraine in Winter
In summer, Hoverla can appear accessible even to people with limited mountain experience.
Winter changes the situation completely.
Snow, ice, strong winds, fog, low temperatures and shorter daylight hours can transform a familiar summer trail into a very different adventure.
And this is where things become particularly interesting: winter ascents of Ukraine's highest mountains are not limited to ordinary hiking.
Hoverla and Petros, for example, are also used for winter mountaineering training and ascents. Depending on conditions, climbers may practice movement with crampons, use ice axes and travel across steep snow-covered slopes.
A winter ascent of Petros can be technically more demanding than an ascent of Hoverla, despite Petros being lower.
The same mountain can therefore be a completely different objective depending on the season.
And this illustrates an important rule of the mountains:
Elevation is only one characteristic of a route.
Can You Visit Several of Ukraine's Highest Mountains on One Hike?
Yes.
This is one of the main attractions of the Chornohora ridge.
Instead of traveling separately to Hoverla, Petros and Pip Ivan, you can plan a multi-day route that connects several peaks.
For example:
Petros → Hoverla → Brebeneskul → Pip Ivan
A route like this allows you not simply to climb Ukraine's highest mountain but to experience part of the Chornohora ridge itself.
Each summit becomes not an isolated destination, but part of a larger journey.
Why Isn't Hoverla 3,000 Meters High?
Compared with the Alps or the Caucasus, 2,061 meters may not sound particularly high.
But the Ukrainian Carpathians are only one part of the much larger Carpathian mountain system.
The highest mountain in the entire Carpathians is Gerlachovský štít in Slovakia, at 2,655 meters.
The Ukrainian section of the Carpathians simply does not contain the highest parts of the entire range.
That is why Ukraine has no 3,000- or 4,000-meter peaks.
But it does have six two-thousanders.
The Highest Mountains in Ukraine Are More Than Just Hoverla
Hoverla remains Ukraine's most famous mountain, and deservedly so.
But once you look beyond the record itself, the Ukrainian mountains become much more interesting.
There is Brebeneskul with its high mountain lake.
There is Pip Ivan with its legendary "White Elephant."
There is Petros with its steeper slopes and distinctive profile.
There are the lesser-known Hutyn-Tomnatyk and Rebra.
There are long routes across the Chornohora ridge where several of Ukraine's highest peaks can be visited during one journey.
There are winter ascents that transform familiar summer trails into completely different experiences.
And there are dozens of other Carpathian peaks that do not qualify as two-thousanders but are no less interesting because of it.
The Ukrainian Carpathians are not the Alps or the Caucasus. There are no 4,000-meter peaks and no modern glaciers here. But this is where Ukraine's highest mountains, beautiful ridges, mountain lakes, alpine meadows and routes ranging from accessible hikes to serious mountain adventures can be found.
And perhaps that is what makes them special.
You do not always have to travel thousands of kilometers to find your mountain.
Sometimes, it begins much closer.
